DREAM Act on Center Stage

HISTORY
Today is the day.  This is the moment we've all been waiting for.  10 years after being introduced, the DREAM Act will finally have its day in the spotlight and be voted on by both chambers of Congress.  The perfect storm.  Introducing in the left corner with the blue trunks Senator Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi facing off against in the right corner, with the red trunks the GOP Congress and the American people.

Votes in relation to the DREAM Act are scheduled for Wednesday, December 8, 2010 in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate, with as many as three of the votes occurring in the House (one on the substance of the bill and as many as two on procedure) and one procedural vote occurring in the Senate.

To move forward, Pelosi must get 218 votes in the House and Reid must get 60 votes in the Senate.  Immigration action should start in the House around 7pm and look for the Senate to move at 4pm.

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE
The stage is set for both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate to proceed on procedural votes today to advance the DREAM Act amnesty that would grant a pathway to citizenship for some 2.1 million young illegal immigrants under age 35.  The DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) is full of loop holes and injustices that include (1) no enforcement provisions (2) no end date or cap (3) no English language requirement (4) includes a pathway for repeat criminal offenders and (5) does not even require a High School diploma or education.  Plus, the DREAM Act will cost the U.S. taxpayers an estimated $6.2 billion dollars per year and deficit spending on welfare programs could increase by at least another $5 billion or more by 2020 as a result of the amnesty measure.  This is a broken piece of legislation at a fragile time in our nation's history.

With an estimated 11-18 million illegal aliens currently residing in the U.S. today, the DREAM Act amnesty would legalize nearly 20% of these people.

REPUBLICAN STRONGHOLD
Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said on the Senate floor Monday that "Americans are willing to consider some form of regular status for those who have peacefully lived and worked here for an extended period of time -- but only after the border is secure."  The ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee remarked "This is because the passage of an amnesty bill such as the DREAM Act is an immediate reward for the illegal entry, and there is no serious plan to stop the illegal flow. Indeed, the legislation incentivizes it."

FOLLOW THE ACTION
The votes will be televised on C-SPAN and C-SPAN2, but you can track the action on-line:

  10. I called my Senator, Kay Hagan (D-NC) and thankfully, she is against the DREAM act. Unfortunately, I called my weasel of a congressman, Brad Miller (D-NC), and he is not stating how he will vote, which of course means he supports it. What a Pelosi drone he is! My hope is we redistrict him out when the new Republican legislature is seated next year.

  14. Our enemies have learned to use our laws and our goodness against us. It is time for us to act to defend what we have here or we will soon lose it to those who have neither the desire nor the inclination to contribute to something greater than, or other than, themselves. People come here illegally counting on our generosity and goodness to allow them to stay after violating our laws to get here and robbing us of our tax dollars and services, all the time hiding behind their children and misinterpretations of the 14th and other amendments. We the people of these United States must continue to act to make our voices heard in every election until this assault on our society ends. This is but part of the battle against terrorism, tyranny and annihilation that we are now fighting. This is not racial, racist or any thing other than the expectation of abiding by the laws of this land and fairness to those who obey the rules and work to support themselves and their families in an honest way while contributing to this society.

  16. Dear Anonymous What exactly is it that you do not understand about ILLEGAL. All other immigrants came to this country legally, why should Mexicans be any different.
My suggestion to you is that you move to Mexico. D. Athanas

  18. UPDATE UPDATE: Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) will vote NO on the DREAM Act! "The Senator will not support consideration of the DREAM Act until substantial and effective measures are taken to secure our borders."

UPDATE UPDATE: Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) will vote NO on the DREAM Act! "Senator Hutchison has been consistent and clear about her position against the current DREAM Act legislation, particularly her concern that the current bill goes far beyond the intended group of children who grew up in the U.S. and attended primary and secondary schools here."

UPDATE UPDATE: Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) will vote NO on the DREAM Act! She said "Millions of immigrants could attempt to become legal residents as a result of this proposal, according to some estimates, and it is to ensure our policies never again lead to a situation where we are confronted with upwards of 12 million illegal immigrants residing within our borders."

  22. Eight GOP Mis-Representatives passed the Dream Act (amnesty) by a score of 216-198...all RINOs: Cao (New Orleans, LA), Michael Castle (Wilmington, DE), Mario and Lincoln Diaz-Balart (both from Miami, FL), Charles Djou (Honolulu, HI), Vernon Ehlers (Grand Rapids, MI), Bob Inglis (Travelers Rest, SC), Ileana Ros-Letinen (Miami, FL) sold out American workers!

  23. The fear in here is so thick it bends light. The racism is likewise in full effect ("...send them ALL back", are you out of your mind?) You Tea Partiers have absolutely no understanding of US History, a loathing of this great country oddly disguised as patriotism, and a lack of Christian charity that suggests you've never really understood the Word of God. I am so proud that this country still maintains a fleck of greatness that it can come together to pass the DREAM act. One chamber of congress down, one to go. And when it passes, I hope you guys will notice how the sky, in fact, does not fall.

  24. There is no fear or racism here. I work, live and play with many legal and illegal immigrants. We're all friends here. I'm not saying to deport anyone. Stop your race baiting bs. Its about the numbers. The DREAM Act will amnesty some 2.1 million young adults and cost billions of dollars to U.S. taxpayers. Who is going to pay for it? The DREAM Act does not provide funding to states and counties to cover the costs it imposes. Since enrollment and funding are limited at public institutions, the act’s passage will require some combination of tuition increases, tax increases to expand enrollment, or a reduction in spaces available for American citizens at these schools. Oh, unemployment is at 10% too.

  25. Your numbers are known to be wrong - the DREAM act will raise revenue by allowing us to tax the people who are being allowed to stay. You use the word Amnesty to describe young workers who are here out of no fault of their own, suggesting that you need a quick peek at the dictionary. As for the lack of racism here and your empty accusations of race-bating, I leave you to scan the comments here - my charge is self-evidently true given the rancorous tone. Hiding behind the (false) fiscal argument is reprehensible.

  26. I suspect the previous ''Anonymous said'' has salted the mine so to speak / posted those racist comments here himself in order to substantiate his own self delusional reality in spite of all the invalidating evidence to the contrary here in the real world. I feel sorry for him.

  27. A civilization must be built on laws to sustain itself. These laws must apply to all citizens equally. These laws are not to be ignored for convenience or arbitrary selection. If you don't like a law then do something to change it within the process of the constitution not your own personal feelings about it. Growup and stop your bitching about it.

  28. Wake-up! For this is NOT a Dream, tiss merely an Act / performance. Harry tells you what you want to hear in one ear, while quietly shoving amnesty in your rear! It's pay-back time lady and germs, Dirty Harry Reid has to pay-back / pay-off those that fudged his successful re-election for him. It is as simple as that. The Dream Act must be stopped!

  29. Whatever human behavior government "rewards" (i.e. illegal immigration), there will be MORE of: It's simple human nature.

Why would ANYONE go through the time and trouble of legally entering and/or remaining in our country, when laws like the DREAM Act reward illegal immigration? Did Reagan's blanket amnesty prevent the current illegal immigration problem?
